Until August 2003 Gardolo di Mezzo was known only for the remains of the walls of a castle dating back to the Middle Ages placed on top of Dos de la Luna, the hill overlooking the town.
During the earthworks for a building project, there has come to light an ancient town and an area of worship dating back to the third millennium BC, corresponding to the ancient Bronze Age.
In all likelihood the settlement based its economic activity on the exploitation of the mineral resources of the Mount Calisio, as documented by the abundant slag found in the area of worship and in some areas adjacent to the site.
