Ferrata

FERRATA GERARDO SEGA

from the Valle dei Molini

Ferrata Gerardo Sega

The Ferrata Gerardo Sega is located in the Group of Monte Baldo, above Avio (TN) in the Valle dei Molini. The approach to the climb itself is about 1h40 along a woodland path, the travel time of the climb itself is about 1h30.

The starting point is an iron ladder, followed by stretches on ledges and some vertical walls, to finish over vertical rocks near the top of the Corno Gallina, at an altitude of 1175 m. Then you find yourself at the end of the via ferrata on a plateau from where in about 5 minutes you can reach the the return trail to the parking lot, that takes about 2h40.

Access

Drive from Trento towards Rovereto, then continue towards Ala, then to Avio. Once in Avio, take the direction for the Valle dei Molini, and after about 10 minutes, on a bend, at your left you can see a parking area, where the trail signpost is clearly visible; there you can park.

Approach

The path 652 starts near the parking lot, along a wooded trail. In about 1 hour you reach a fork at Preafessa, where you can take the path that leads to the ferrata, and which intersects with the path of return. From the same fork you can also take the path that leads to the Preafessa waterfall; you can get there in about 5 minutes, and it is definitely worth it:

It takes about 45 more minutes to get to the start of the ferrata. After the waterfall the trail is woody, except the last 5 minutes, where it runs on a rocky ledge, and from there begins the ferrata:

Ferrata

The ferrata begins with an iron ladder:

Here is located a plate dedicated to Gerardo Sega:

Then you go along a ledge, called Via dei Carbonai:

After the ledge you continue in a forest, climbing along short stretches of rock. After the forest you find yourself on another ledge, vertically above the previous one; from there you can admire a beautiful view of the valley:

At the end of the ledge, you continue in a wood, with occasional rocks to climb. You arrive at the end of the forest, on a pitch, where there is a lookout point; in front of you there is the last part of climbing, on a vertical wall, on the Corno Gallina:

After about 5 minutes you will reach the wall. In the first part you go straight on along the wall, then turn right and climb the last stretch to get on the pitch:

From there you can see the Valle dei Molini, the Pasubio, the Carega group, and the Group of Monte Baldo:

Return

At the end of the ferrata begins the road that leads to the parking lot in the Valle dei Molini in about 2h40, along the path 685 in the direction of Rifugio Monte Baldo / Madonna della Neve. You walk on an easy mule track passing along the meadows:

You arrive in Val dei Rii, from where you continue on a wooded trail, passing a small stream, and in about 15 minutes you reach the Santuario della Madonna della Neve:

From the sanctuary you continue on the dirt road, up to the junction Villa Arvedi:

At the junction, you can turn to the Rifugio Monte Baldo and reach it in about 15 minutes (you will then have to return to the fork), or continue along path 652 to Valle dei Molini, for about 1h30 of wooded path. You arrive at the junction of Ponte Balanza, from where you continue on trail 652, always on a forest road beside the bed of a stream. From there, the parking lot is about 1h15 away.

Along the trail there is a boulder, called Sas de la Vecia. The legend says that under that rock a witch was crushed:

Then you arrive at the fork Preafessa and from there you continue along the path that leads you back to the starting point.
